Akron Racers
2, Team Canada 6
AKRON, Ohio — Coming off their biggest
offensive explosion of the year on
Friday, the Akron Racers were unable to
cross the plate enough during the first
game of their double header as they
dropped the third game of their series
against the Canadian National Team 6-2.
The problem was not that the Racers were
unable to get on base as they had 13
base runners, but that they were not
able to take advantage of situations
once they were on base.
The Racers scoring started in the first
inning when Captain Kristen Butler added
to her team leading RBI total (12) by
hitting leadoff hitter Norrelle Dickson
home with a sacrifice fly.
Mid American Conference player of the
year Jessica Toocheck had the offensive
highlight for Akron in the bottom of the
fourth when she tripled to left field
with outfielder Susan Ogden on base.
The Racers did have other chances
throughout the game putting a runner on
base in every inning, but base running
blunders and two double play grounders
made it so they were unable to score any
more runs.
Former Ohio State Buckeye Jamee Juarez
took to the circle for the Racers and
was unable to keep the Canadians bats
silent from the first inning when she
allowed a home run to Jennifer Yee.
Juarez really only had one bad inning,
the third, when she gave up four runs.
The big blow of the inning came from the
bat of Kaleigh Rafter who crushed a
three run homer in the top of the
inning. Left fielder India Chiles had a
beat on the ball, but it bounced off of
her glove and over the fence resulting
in the round tripper. After that inning,
Jaurez was able to find her rhythm and
eventually completed the game. Juarez
gave up six runs on nine hits and three
home runs in her seven innings of work.
Robin Mackin, who helped pitch a no
hitter for Team Canada on Wednesday
night, looked in control for most of the
contest and was able to get out of jams
throughout the game. The Canadian
pitcher allowed two runs on six hits in
five innings of work.
