AKRON,
Ohio—The Akron Racers added some
depth to their pitching staff on
Thursday as General Manager Joey
Arrietta signed undrafted free
agent Angel Shamblin from the
University of Houston.
Shamblin
was the ace of Houston’s staff
last season as she posted a 0.94
ERA to go along with her
impressive 36-5 record and was
named the Conference USA Pitcher
of the Year.
Batters
would shutter when they saw
Shamblin take the mound during
her senior season as she struck
out 299 hitters and held her
opponents to a .167 average.
While she
made headlines as a pitcher, she
is no slouch with a bat in her
hand. She proved to be a threat
at the plate as well as she
posted a .308 average with eight
doubles and three homeruns in
just 91 at bats.
She was
recently handed various
postseason awards due to her
outstanding play; perhaps the
most impressive was being named
to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA
All-American Second-Team.
The Florida
native also garnered her third
NFCA All South Region Second
Team Award and was a finalist
for this year’s USA Softball
Player of the Year Award.
Shamblin
will now travel to Akron to meet
with team management and join
the rest of her teammates for
their preseason practice.
The Racers
will start the season on the
road against the Chicago Bandits
on June 6, but they return home
the following weekend to face
off against last season’s league
champion, the Washington Glory.
Their home opener will be on
June 11 at 7:05 pm.
Various
season ticket packages are on
sale now at the Racers’ box
office and can also be purchased
by calling (330) 276-8188. More
information about the Racers and
their upcoming season can be
