RACERS CONTINUE
WINNING WAYS
Akron , Ohio –
The defending National Pro
Fastpitch champion Akron Racers continued its
winning ways Wednesday, but in an unconventional
fashion. The Racers defeated the Arizona Heat 2-1
with the winning run plated on an illegal pitch.
The score was tied 1-1 in the bottom
of the sixth inning. Designated player Stephanie
Pomes was on third and left-fielder Kim Gonzalez was
on second for Akron. Heat relief pitcher Desiree
Serrano was called for delivering an illegal pitch
which scored Pomes and advanced Gonzalez to third.
The mistake proved to be costly, giving Akron the
eventual winning run.
Akron jumped out to an early 1-0 lead
in the bottom of the first after stringing together
three-straight, two-out singles. Following hits by
Crystl Bustos and Jenny Topping, Oli Keohohou
knocked in her third run of the year as Bustos
scored from second.
The Heat quickly responded in the top
of the second with a run to tie the game at one.
The run was the first allowed by Akron this season.
Jamie Southern, who opened the year by throwing a
no-hitter, gave up a single to Nichole Thompson to
lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt and
another single off the bat of Shelly Schultz,
Arizona had runners on the corners. Southern threw
a wild pitch in the dirt, allowing Thompson to
score, knotting the game at one.
The score remained tied until the
sixth. The Racers squandered scoring opportunities
in both the third and fifth innings, including a
bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth.
Jamie Southern notched her second win
and complete game of the season, giving up one run
on six hits, while striking out six. With the win
the Racers stay undefeated and improve to an overall
record of 4-0.
The Racers and Heat resume their
four-game-series at Firestone Stadium Thursday
night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
