Racers Take First Game from Texas
Akron, Ohio -
The Akron Racers made sure that when the Texas
Thunder
came to town their welcoming wasn't a happy one.
The Racers (21-15)
dominated every aspect of the game Wednesday night
defeating the
Thunder 4-0.
Radara McHugh (10-5) took the circle for the Racers
and baffled the Thunder (16-21)
bats all night long. McHugh struck out eight and
didn't allow a hit
after the fifth inning. Texas managed only three
hits on the evening
and never advanced a runner past
second base.
The Racer bats exhibited the same control over the
game as did McHugh.
After retiring the first two batters of the game,
Thunder starter
Selena Settlemier (2-6) got Caitlyn Benyi to hit a
flyball to left. However,
the evening sun that plagued both left-fielders in
the first inning
forced Danyele Gomez to miss play the ball giving
Benyi a
double. She scored a batter later Oli Keohohou
delivered a two-out RBI
single to left.
That would prove to be all the offense that McHugh
would need, but her
teammates made sure to give her plenty of support as
catcher Kristen
Butler led off the second with a single. Two
batters later shortstop
Kristin Johnson came up and extended the lead to 3-0
when she laced a
home run over the left-field fence, her second
longball of the year.
The Racers would add the final run of the game in
the bottom of the
fourth when right-fielder Kim Gonzalez scored on an
error by Gomez with
two outs in the inning.
The Racers will be back in action at Firestone
Stadium tomorrow as
they take on the Thunder in game two of their four
game series. Game time
is set for 7:05 and fans can connect
the Akron Racers ticket office at
330-376-8188 for more information.
