Racers Silence Thunder
Akron, Ohio -
The Akron Racers took the field Friday night,
and behind the arm of Brandee McArthur and a pair of
longballs
defeated the Texas Thunder by a score of 3-0.
Iyhia McMichael wasted no time
getting to Thunder (16-22) hurler
Christa Williams (9-7). On the
second pitch of the
game, McMichael crushed her third homerun of the
season over the left-
field fence. The blast also gave McMichael a share
of the league lead
in hits with 41 on the year.
Brandee McArthur (6-7) tossed a complete game,
shutout for the Racers (22-15),
allowing only three hits.
The biggest threat Texas had all
night was in the first when, with a
runner on second and one out, Danyele Gomez smashed
a double over the
head of Racers' right-fielder Emily Price. Price
recovered and
threw a perfect strike to the cut-off man Caitlin
Benyi. Benyi then
threw out Kristen Zaleski as she tried to score on
the play.
After escaping the first inning McArthur would allow
only one Thunder
runner to make it to second base the rest of the
night. McArthur
let the Thunder put the ball in play, only recording
one strikeout, but
a strong defensive effort from the Racers kept
baserunners at a premium.
Williams went the next three innings without
allowing a hit until
Kristen Butler ledoff the fifth inning with a
line-drive homerun to
right-center. The Racers would add a final run in
the sixth inning
on a throwing error by second baseman Lindsey
Gardner that scored
Stephanie Pomes from second base.
Despite the two homeruns, Williams had a solid
outing
allowing only two earned runs on four hits and two
walks, while
striking out ten.
The Racers and Thunder will conclude their series
tomorrow at Firestone
Stadium with a day/night doubleheader. Games
scheduled for
1:05 pm and 7:05 pm. For ticket information contact
